Where do bed bugs come from?

Well that depends what you are really asking: Where do bed bugs originate from? OR How did I get bed bugs in my home? We'll answer both questions for you below. Where do bed bugs come from originally?

Originally, they lived in temperate zones across the planet. Bed bugs have been on this planet throughout history. However, in the late 1950's, DDT killed out many bed bug populations. Since that time, we have stopped using many pesticides, allowing bed bugs to make a resurgence. Furthermore, evidence suggests that bed bugs have become increasingly resistant to modern-day pesticides.

How did I get bed bugs in my home?

Bed bugs are very small and can easily hide during the day in the crevices of mattresses, box springs and even in holes in the wall. They tend to hide near beds so that they can be close to a host and able to feed for longer periods of time - while you're sleeping!

The world has become more accessible, making world wide travel easier and easier. Typical places where you should be careful to look for and prevent bed bugs include hotels, dorm rooms, schools and even hospitals. Bed bugs will hitch a ride on your clothing and/or bags, allowing the easy spread of infestation. Within a single complex, bed bugs can crawl from one apartment to the next using the pipes and/or hallways.
