Despite past attempts by the landlord to get rid of the bed bugs, Manions landlord was forced to persist and hire a new exterminator to kill the bed bugs in the apartment building. Hope the landlord has enough foresight to encase those mattresses!

    • Bed Bug Infest Saratoga Springs Housing

      Bed Bugs in Public Housing

Saratoga Springs, December 2011. A recent bed bug infestation at a Saratoga Springs public housing building terrifies residents. One resident speaks out about her experience with bed bugs.

Teresa Grocki, a resident of Stonequist Apartments has been cleaning her mattress, clothing and self to try to get rid of bed bugs in her own apartment. Until recently, when she took her bed bug problem to the City Council. She urged leaders to help her elimiate bed bugs for all the tennants of the building.

One Tennant Speaks Out About Bed Bugs

While she was initially embarrased to speak out due to the psychological and sanitary factors associated with bed bugs, she ultimatelly felt empowered to take it to City Council. Grocki was supported by other residents, who signed statements supporting her plea. While there is a stigma associated with bed bug infestations, reporting bed bugs seems to be the best way to enact large scale changes.

This difficulty is exaserbated in low-income residences, where tennants often cannot afford the cost of bed bug eradication and may be unable to move. Mayor Scott Johnson said Wednesday that his office had sent a code enforcement officer to the high rise after recently being contacted about the problem.

It is unclear how the bed bugs got there. However, some people believe they may have arrived with visitors from other cities. What is clear is that removing bed bugs from large apartment buildings is a large and expensive project, because all surrounding rooms must be checked and treated for bed bugs. Estimates suggest that getting rid of the bedbugs in Stonequist Apartments would cost about $25,000. We hope that the tennants at Stonequist, as well as across the globe are able to once again sleep tight and eliminate bed bugs.

    • Bed Bug Protection in the Form of Arm Hair?

Bed Bugs and Arm HairNew studies indicate that bed bugs are less likely to bite individuals with more arm hair. Researchers believe this is because the hair slows down the bed bugs and warns the person being bitten. A few brave individuals volunteered to test this theory. Bed bug bites are in fact most likely to occur on the face, wrists and feet; where hair is least likely to grow.

Researchers have gone so far as to suggest that preventing bed bug and other insect bites are the reason why we have arm hair. While this theory may sound extreme, it is plausible considering that the thin hair covering our arms and legs is not quite long enough to protect us from the elements, as it does for other mammals.

Bugs in Bed Challenge on “I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here”

This past week on the “I’m a Celebrity” show, the blue team won the horrific “Beat the Bugs Challenge”, also known as the Bed Bug Challenge. Imagining your warm bed at home infested with bed bugs is bad enough, but these participants had to spend the night in beds within Perspex boxes with all kinds of jungle critters crawling around.

bed bug infestation Each team got to choose which “bed bugs” went into the other teams boxes – snakes, rats, cockroaches and crabs are just a few of their options. The team that spent the most time in the bed bug infested beds won the challenge. The blue team won with 35 hours and 56 minutes, while the orange team only had a total of 29 hours and 22 minutes. Maybe if the  orange team had bed bug protection, they could have stood a chance against the blue team.

This challenge kept many of the participants up all night and had many of them in tears. But then again who could sleep with so many bugs in bed? After watching that episode of the TV show, its not easy crawling into bed while hoping nothing else is crawling in. Sleep better with a bed bug mattress encasement that can keep the bed bugs out.

    • Bed bugs on Airplanes

      Traveling with Bed Bugs

bed bug travel Finding bed bugs in hotels is old news, now you might find the bed bugs on airplanes! After taking a British Airways flight from Los Angeles to London, one business class passenger discovered bed bug bites all over her arms and legs. Believe it or not, this is not the first of bed bug infestations found on airplanes. Last year a business class passenger found bed bug bites on his body after taking a flight with United Airlines. Looks like bed bugs also use airplanes to travel!

British Airways ignored complaints about the bed bugs one passenger discovered until a website publicizing the airline's bed bug infestation went viral. The airline ended up having to get rid of bed bugs from two of their planes. Many airlines along with British Airways, have faced this issue of bed bugs in the past but it has never been publicized so as not to affect business.

How to Prevent Bed Bugs on Airplanes:

Airlines are responsible for preventing bed bugs on flights, but apparently they aren't doing enough to protect their passenger. Take extra caution to make sure you don’t end up with bed bug bites coming off that plane!bed bug travel pillow

      1. Bring your own bed-bug proof pillow and blanket to protect against bed bugs while on your flight
      2. Use anti-bed bug luggage liners and bed bug proof garment bag encasements so that your clothes are protected from bed bug infestations
      3. Be careful about bringing bed bugs into your home – clean your luggage and clothing before entering your house

    • Bed Bugs in Hair

Protect a bed, a couch, a chair from getting bed bugs because they might end up in your hair! There is tons of information out there about getting rid of bed bugs from your homes and clothes but what happens when you get bed bugs in your hair? Who even knew you could get bed bugs in hair?

      Bed bugs Prefer Brunettes

bed bug in hairBed bugs go everywhere! And it might make you want to consider shaving off all your hair, but bed bugs can get in your hair. Unlike lice, bed bugs do not prefer to be in hair; what the bed bugs prefer is skin. However, hair does have some attractive qualities to bed bugs. Bed bugs like warm environments and a head covered with hair is warm.  They also prefer dark places and hair can provide this a dark hidden sanctuary for bed bugs – which can mean that bed bugs probably prefer brunettes.

Bed bugs travel very quickly from one place to another, so lying in an infested bed or putting your head on a couch with bed bugs can easily cause the bugs to transfer to your hair. As gross as bed bugs in hair sounds, it’s not as bad as you think. Bed bugs are unable to navigate through hair as efficiently as lice can so simply using a nit comb or lice shampoo can easily get rid of bed bugs from your hair.

The best way to prevent getting bed bugs in your hair, is to prevent getting bed bugs in your home. Protect your bed, couches and belongings with the proper bed bug proof encasements that trap bed bugs and prevent infestations keeping the bed bugs away from your skin and hair.

    • Bed Bug Lawsuits

Bed Bug Lawyers – An Increasingly Popular Profession

bed bugAs bed bug infestations are showing up in more and more places, bed bug lawyers have become more and more popular. Getting rid of bed bugs is the least of commercial property owners’ worries now that these new lawyers are filing bed bug lawsuits. These new indirect costs that bed bug infestations are creating for bed bug lawyers and bed bug insurance far exceed the direct costs of bed bugs such as for bed bug mattress encasements and bed bug extermination.

bed bug mattress encasementIn Baltimore, on October 24th, the first bed bug lawsuit was reported by ABC news as “the first of what could end up binge many.” In this bed bug lawsuit, Kristen Saunders won $40,000 in damages because her apartment management took over a month to get rid of bed bugs from within her apartment. In Ohio, Knights Inn is facing its second bed bug lawsuit for failing to do their part in preventing bed bug infestations and inefficiently removing bed bugs from their motel rooms. Theres even a bed bug lawsuit against Knox County Jail, filed by a woman who claimed to be injured due to bed bug bites in her eye during the time she served in the jail.

These new lawsuits are perhaps more frightening than the bed bugs are themselves. Property owners better figure it out sooner than later that unless they take preventative measures they will not only face a bed bug infestation but likely, a bed bug lawsuit.

      Bedbug tips for Property Owners:

      1. encasing every mattress and box spring to protect against bed bugs
      2. Bed bug extermination can cost between $4K and $10k or even more, depending on the size of your facility, and the degree of infestation. Buy encasements in bulk and save tons of money of mattress replacement while keeping the bed bugs out at the same time.
      3. Use metal headboards and closet hanging bars when ever possible
      4. Educate tenants about the threat of bed bugs. Tell them what bed bugs look like, how to spot them, and what to do if they turn up.
      5. Keep halls and public areas free of clutter
      6. Contact your local health authorities to learn more about your legal obligations regarding bed bugs, and have a plan of action ready to go if bed bugs turn up.
